The risks of loan and its management in conventional and Islamic banks: a descriptive comparative study of Mandiri and Bri conventional and Islamic banks in Kediri

The study aims at investigating methods of managing the risks of loan at Mandiri and BRI Islamic and Conventional Banks in Kediri. The study employs a qualitative and comparative method, using interview and documentation as techniques for data collection. The study was focused on two Islamic banks; Mandiri Islamic and BRI Islamic and two conventional banks; Mandiri conventional and BRI conventional. The study arrives at a number of conclusions, the summary of which is that the conventional banks conduct the loan risk management through their bank committees, and in case of late, or failure to make payment by the customers the conventional banks assess the customers by monitoring the legal lending limit. And Islamic banks manage the risk of loan through a committee consisted of a manager and board of commissioners and the Shari’ah risk control committee, with the help of Shari’ah board of supervisors.
